Camera rolls grow quietly. Screenshots stay after they have served their purpose, burst shots create near-identical frames, and videos consume far more storage than a normal photo. Start by finding obvious clutter, then make your choices and review them before deleting anything.
1. Start with the easiest categories
Do not begin by scrolling through every memory in chronological order. Start with categories that contain obvious clutter:
- Old screenshots and screen recordings
- Large videos you no longer need
- Exact duplicate files
- Repeated photos from the same moment
Removing these items first makes the rest of the library easier to review.
2. Separate exact duplicates from similar photos
Exact duplicates are copies of the same file. Similar photos are different images that look alike, such as several portraits taken seconds apart. Exact matches are usually simpler decisions. Similar groups deserve a closer comparison for focus, expression, framing, and motion blur.

3. Review photos one by one
A swipe-based review shows one photo at a time. Keep the photo you want, add unwanted items to a temporary delete list, and move on. If you are unsure, keep the item. You can always review it again later.
4. Review the delete list as a group
Before deleting anything, scan the full selection. Look for photos that are part of a sequence, documents you still need, and images that may not be backed up elsewhere. This final pass is faster than the first review because you are checking a much smaller collection.
5. Finish the iOS cleanup cycle
Items deleted through iOS Photos normally move to Recently Deleted. They can continue to use storage until they are removed permanently or Apple’s recovery period ends. Open Recently Deleted only after you are confident that the selection is correct.
Clean up a little each week
A ten-minute review every week is easier than a multi-hour cleanup once a year. Try clearing screenshots first, checking large videos second, and using the remaining time for recent photos.
