Check what is using storage first

Open iPhone Settings, then review General and iPhone Storage. This shows whether Photos is using enough space to be worth cleaning first.

If Photos is large, plan the cleanup around file type and certainty rather than scrolling from the oldest image to the newest.

Start with large videos

A single long video can use more space than hundreds of photos. Review videos you downloaded, recorded accidentally, exported more than once, or no longer need. Keep original family moments and project files unless you have confirmed another reliable copy.

Clear screenshots and screen recordings

Screenshots are often temporary: tickets, directions, product references, conversations, and reminders. Delete expired items, but preserve documents or information that still matters. Screen recordings can be especially large and are easy to forget.

Remove exact duplicates before similar photos

Exact copies are usually the easiest place to start. Similar photos need more attention because they can contain small but important differences. Compare them as a group and choose which frames you want to keep.

Understand iCloud Photos and device storage

When iCloud Photos is enabled, changes can sync across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Deleting a photo from one synced device may remove it from the shared library as well. “Optimize iPhone Storage” is different: it can keep smaller device versions while originals remain in iCloud.

Verify your backup strategy before a large cleanup. A synced library is not always the same as an independent backup. Confirm where important originals exist before permanently removing anything.

Review before you confirm

Collect unwanted items in a temporary list, then review them together. Check for documents, favorite moments, and complete event sequences. Only after that final pass should you approve deletion through iOS Photos.

Check Recently Deleted

Deleted items normally move to Recently Deleted. They may continue using storage during the recovery period. If you need the space immediately, review that album carefully before removing its contents permanently.
